U.S. Recovery Lumbers On, Though Elevated Layoffs Remain a Risk(미국 복구 목재 에, 높은 해고는 위험 남아 있지만)

The U.S. economic rebound continues to lumber(육중하게 걷다) on thanks to gradually improving consumer demand that remains at risk of becoming tripped(방해하다) up by still-elevated joblessness.

Bloomberg Economics created a weekly dashboard of high-frequency, alternative and market-based data to track the economy’s plunge into recession and eventual recovery. Now approaching the end of the third quarter, the economy is clawing(움켜잡았다) its way forward as households and merchants adapt to a coronavirus-altered shopping environment.

Weekly measures of same-store sales and restaurant bookings improved slightly.

“The economic recovery has lost momentum, but not reversed. The economy continues to add jobs although layoffs are still elevated,” Bloomberg economist Eliza Winger said. “The latest data on same-store sales has been somewhat more encouraging. Still, the recovery is at risk of stalling.(정체하다)”

While initial jobless claims decreased in the most recent week, they still exceed 1 million on a weekly basis, and consumer sentiment is stuck at depressed (침체)levels. The improvement in job openings since the worst of the pandemic is also leveling off.(수평으로 비행하다) Listings on Indeed.com are down 21% from a year ago after being 18% lower in late-July and early August.

For the millions of jobless Americans, $600 in supplemental(추가적) weekly unemployment benefits(보조금) was an essential financial lifeline. However, the fiscal relief has expired and lawmakers have failed to agree on a new package(일괄법안), leaving many families struggling to make ends(목적) meet. President Donald Trump signed an executive action (행정소송)on Aug. 8 to provide $300 a week in federal funds to the unemployed, though that money is just starting to reach people in some states.(일부주들)

Consumer spending appears to have held up (유지하다)in August, however. Johnson Redbook same-store sales, a weekly indicator of retail sales, improved for a third week, but are still down 1.9% from a year ago.

Data from OpenTable, a restaurant-booking platform, showed reservations improved for a fifth straight week. Health risks, however, still leave bookings 48% below year-ago levels.
